A fatal crash on Interstate 25 near Monument, Colorado, on Wednesday morning, November 27, led to significant delays and a temporary closure of northbound lanes.
According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when two vehicles, a Jeep and a Subaru Outback, collided on northbound I-25 at milepost 160. After the crash, the drivers moved their vehicles to the left shoulder to exchange information.
While they were outside their vehicles, a pickup truck, traveling at high speed, struck the cars. One of the drivers was hit by the Subaru and thrown into the southbound lanes, where he was subsequently run over by passing traffic. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
CSP confirmed that one driver involved in the incident remained at the scene, but other drivers left the area. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed as of now. Authorities are asking anyone with information or who witnessed the crash to contact CSP Dispatch at (719) 544-2424.
As of 1:33 p.m., the southbound lanes of I-25 had reopened, but the northbound lanes remained closed. The closure on the northbound side was expected to last until about 3 p.m., as cleanup efforts were in their final stages. A detour was put in place at West Baptist Road, and southbound I-25 was restricted to one lane, causing significant traffic backups. By 1:15 p.m., delays of nearly an hour were reported on the northbound side, while southbound drivers faced a 30-minute delay.
The CSP is reminding drivers to slow down, particularly in heavy traffic or when approaching crash sites, as secondary accidents can occur when drivers are unable to react in time.
