The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) has shared an uplifting story about a puppy who overcame a difficult start in life. This puppy, the only survivor out of a litter of 10, was discovered emaciated and covered in feces inside a car trunk.
However, thanks to the care and love provided by her new forever home, she is now thriving. The person responsible for abandoning her and her littermates in the trunk has also faced legal consequences for their actions.
In 2023, Animal Law Enforcement (ALE) officers at HSPPR received a distress call regarding an undisclosed number of dogs trapped inside a car trunk. Upon arriving at the scene, the officers were immediately greeted by the heart-wrenching sounds of desperate cries emanating from the confined space.
One of the three surviving puppies was brought to HSPPR where it received immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, only one puppy, named Griselda by the HSPPR staff, managed to pull through. With constant care and support, Griselda started showing signs of improvement. Eventually, she was placed with Allison, a member of the HSPPR staff, who became her foster mother.
Months later, Bits finally reunited with her family after being renamed Griselda. “We were overwhelmed with joy to see her healthy and thriving, celebrating this beautiful triumph of life over tragedy,” HSPPR expressed.
HSPPR stated that they were able to bring the original owner to justice through the dedicated efforts of the ALE team. The team conducted over 20 home visits and spent at least 90 hours investigating the case. This thorough investigation led to the identification and apprehension of the person responsible for locking the puppies in the trunk.
The owner was sentenced to 60 days in jail, ordered to pay $13,000 in restitution and additional fines, attend 26 mandatory counseling sessions, complete an animal cruelty prevention course, and prohibited from having any contact with animals for a period of five years.
HSPPR had the privilege of recently reuniting with Bits when she came in to the Wellness Center for a check-up and vaccines. Upon entering the room, Bits enthusiastically bounded towards her foster mom, Allison, eager to be reunited.
HSPPR expressed gratitude towards the individuals involved in rescuing and rehabilitating Bits, a dog with a heartbreaking past. Instead of dwelling on the cruelty she endured, they choose to celebrate the fulfilling life she now enjoys.
The organization acknowledged the efforts of the ALE officers who saved her, the veterinary team who nursed her back to health, the foster family who provided a loving home, and the family who ultimately adopted her and provided her with a loving and wonderful life.
