The NWS in Washington DC has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of Virginia and West Virginia, including Washington, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren, Morgan, and Berkeley counties.
On Saturday, December 14, 2004, at around noon, the NWS issued the following alert:
Mixed precipitation is expected from 7 a.m. Sunday (December 15) to 1 a.m. Monday (December 16).
Snow and sleet accumulations can reach up to one inch, while ice accumulations can be around one-tenth of an inch.
Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become slippery and hazardous due to snow and ice. It is important to anticipate slick road conditions. Additionally, the combination of snow and ice may lead to sporadic power outages.
Shenandoah National Park made an announcement on Saturday afternoon that Skyline Drive would be closed at 5 p.m. due to the anticipated severe weather.
The NWS weather statement states that…
Rain is expected at elevations below 2000 ft on Sunday afternoon, while above 2000 ft, there may be a period of freezing rain or drizzle that could continue into Sunday night. The most significant ice accumulation is anticipated at elevations above 2500 ft, although there is a possibility of a thin layer of ice near the valley floor.
If you already have ice melt at home, it would be a good idea to place it near the door tonight. Additionally, you can also keep your outdoor brooms and shovels ready for use.
The National Weather Service (NWS) is urging everyone to stay prepared for potentially hazardous road conditions. It is important to exercise caution and reduce your speed while driving, as roads may become slippery.
