Man from Burlington accused of fraud

The Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office recently received information regarding a potential fraud incident that took place in October at 9276 Lakeview Drive in rural Burlington, Iowa.

During the investigation, deputies discovered that REM Iowa, a company specializing in in-home care for individuals with disabilities, had reported to Health and Human Services about a former employee who misused a client’s debit card for personal financial benefit.

A former employee named David Ethan Klaus, aged 23 and hailing from Burlington, IA, has been apprehended by deputies after it was discovered that he had illicitly utilized a client’s debit card information to make purchases through the Door Dash app.

According to deputies, Klaus made more than 70 purchases totaling over $2000 between January and August of this year.

According to deputies, Klaus was arrested for financial exploitation of an older individual, which is classified as a Class D Felony. Additionally, Klaus was also charged with unauthorized use of a credit card over $1500, which is also classified as a Class D Felony.

Deputies said that Klaus was brought to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.
