David Mundt, 61, was arrested recently following a cold case investigation that utilized advanced DNA technology. This investigation, which began earlier this year, has linked him to two similar cases. One case occurred in October 1992 in Texas, while the other took place in Arizona in July 1986. The police in Phoenix have provided this information.
In 1986, an unidentified toddler was abducted “in the middle of the night” by an intruder who broke into their home in Phoenix, according to police.
The department stated that the suspect could not be identified by the officers.
In 2011, authorities initiated a cold case investigation to explore the potential use of DNA evidence in solving the heinous crime. This investigation revealed a match to the 1992 assault in Henderson, TX, according to law enforcement officials.
The DNA from both cases did not match any named individual in police databases, leaving the puzzle unsolved, according to the authorities.
In a surprising turn of events, another cold case was brought to light this year. According to the department, law enforcement officers were able to find a crucial lead that ultimately resulted in a match with Mundt thanks to the use of cutting-edge genetic genealogy technology.
According to the Henderson News, a DNA match was found using a “surreptitious” sample obtained during his time in custody for driving with a suspended license. The individual in question resided just 30 miles away from the location of the Henderson attack.
In August, Mundt faced charges for the Texas case and was detained with a bail set at $1 million. Presently, authorities in Arizona are seeking to extradite him to face charges of kidnapping and sexual assault in their jurisdiction.
