WASHINGTON, D.C. — Kari Lake, a prominent ally of Donald Trump and former Arizona gubernatorial and Senate candidate, is reportedly being considered for the role of U.S. Ambassador to Mexico in the upcoming Trump administration.
According to a report by Semafor, Lake is a top contender for the position, which would involve managing relations with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government. If appointed, Lake would oversee critical bilateral issues, including immigration, trade, and border security—topics she has championed as part of her political platform.
Lake, a former Fox10 news anchor in Phoenix, rose to prominence during her 2022 Arizona gubernatorial run, which she narrowly lost to Democrat Katie Hobbs. She launched a subsequent bid for the U.S. Senate in 2024 but was again unsuccessful. Throughout both campaigns, Lake received Donald Trump’s endorsement and has been a vocal supporter of his border policies.
The ambassadorship to Mexico is a critical diplomatic role, particularly given the challenges of managing immigration, border security, and economic ties. Lake’s stance on immigration and close alignment with Trump’s policies could signal a tougher posture toward Mexico in the administration’s foreign policy.
The Trump transition team has declined to comment on the potential appointment.
