The administration of Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has recently announced the introduction of new grants aimed at boosting the state’s construction workforce.
Hobbs initiated a program called BuildItAZ in 2023. The objective of this program is to increase the number of construction apprentices in Arizona by 2026. This will be achieved through grant funding provided to apprenticeship programs. The funding will help in enhancing recruitment efforts, retaining current apprentices, and offering support services like child care and transportation. The ultimate goal is to double the number of construction apprentices in the state within the specified timeframe.
According to the governor’s office, the program disbursed approximately $650,000 to five organizations in its inaugural year.
“According to a press release, Hobbs stated that apprenticeships not only provide economic opportunities for individuals in Arizona but also offer job prospects from the very first day. These programs are known to provide competitive wages and impart valuable skills that can lead to long-term, sustainable careers.”
Next month, a new round will begin, making use of $1 million in federal funding.
“The first year of the BuildItAZ Initiative has been a remarkable success, with over 1,000 new construction apprentices enrolling in registered apprenticeship programs. We anticipate getting even closer to our goal in the upcoming grant round, which is scheduled to open in December,” stated Carlos Contreras, the director of the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.
Starting from December 3rd, apprenticeship programs can now apply for grants through the Office of Economic Opportunity.
