Cedar Rapids Man Charged in Parking Lot Robbery Attempt with Weapon

A 19-year-old man faces multiple charges following an attempted armed robbery on Monday evening. Authorities in Cedar Rapids responded to reports of the incident, which occurred shortly before 6 p.m. in the parking lot at 65 Jones View Parkway SW.

Upon arrival, officers found a man with a minor hand injury who reported being the victim of an attempted robbery. According to the police, the suspect brandished a knife and demanded compliance. When the victim refused, the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.

The suspect and the vehicle were located later that night, at approximately 11:25 p.m. Police identified the suspect as Joshua Kakina of Cedar Rapids and took him into custody.

Kakina has been charged with the following offenses:

  • First-Degree Robbery
  • First-Degree Burglary
  • Going Armed with Intent
  • Assault While Displaying a Weapon
  • Use of a Dangerous Weapon During the Commission of a Crime

The investigation remains ongoing.
