ADOT Advances Tucson-to-Phoenix Passenger Rail Plans with Federal Support

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is taking another significant step toward the long-envisioned passenger rail line connecting Tucson and Phoenix. With the aid of a federal grant under the Corridor Identification and Development Program, ADOT is collaborating with transportation authorities across Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal counties to refine the project’s scope and feasibility.

The rail line, planned to follow an existing corridor, would connect Tucson International Airport to Buckeye, passing near the Phoenix area’s major passenger airports. While earlier studies and public meetings shaped the proposed route, more detailed evaluations are needed to determine the specific infrastructure requirements, station locations, train frequency, and potential ridership.

“This corridor has been under study, but there’s more to be done to understand exactly what infrastructure is needed,” said Steve Elliott, an ADOT spokesperson.

In addition to refining the project’s details, the current phase will focus on estimating costs, identifying funding sources, and setting a construction timeline. By completing these federally mandated steps, ADOT aims to position the rail line as a key candidate for future investment in national rail infrastructure.

The proposed service has the potential to significantly enhance regional connectivity, offering a convenient and sustainable alternative to driving along the busy I-10 corridor. The project marks a critical effort to expand Arizona’s transportation infrastructure while addressing growing demand for efficient intercity travel.
