Suspect Arrested After Shooting Sparks Barricade Situation in Phoenix

A 50-year-old man has been arrested following a shooting incident that escalated into a barricade situation in Phoenix on Sunday, authorities reported.

The Phoenix Police Department responded to a shooting near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road around 12:40 p.m. When officers arrived, they discovered that family members had already taken the victim to the hospital. The man’s injuries were confirmed to be non-life-threatening.

As officers began their investigation, attention turned to a neighbor believed to be involved in the incident. This led to a tense barricade situation at the suspect’s residence. After negotiations, police arrested Freddie Vela, 50, who later admitted to the shooting.

Initially, Vela claimed self-defense. However, investigators stated that his account did not align with evidence at the crime scene. Authorities also recovered the firearm used in the incident.

Vela now faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault and possession of a firearm as a prohibited possessor. He has been booked into jail as the investigation continues.

Phoenix police have not released additional details but confirmed that the case remains active.
