The Chandler Fire Department has achieved the prestigious Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation, a recognition awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This milestone highlights the department’s dedication to providing compassionate and inclusive services to autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals in the community.
To earn the CAC designation, at least 80% of the department’s public-facing personnel completed comprehensive training designed to enhance their understanding of autism. The program equips first responders with strategies to effectively communicate with and assist individuals with autism during emergencies.
“Our mission has always been to protect and serve every resident with care and compassion,” said Chandler Fire Chief Tom Dwiggins. “This certification strengthens our ability to respond to emergencies involving autistic individuals. The training ensures that everyone feels safe and supported during critical moments.”
The specialized training provides Chandler Fire personnel with tools to address sensory triggers, navigate communication challenges, and implement tailored approaches in various situations. These efforts aim to ensure greater safety, comfort, and support for individuals with autism and their families during emergency interventions. The initiative reflects the department’s broader commitment to inclusivity and equitable service delivery.
“Chandler Fire Department’s efforts demonstrate their dedication to ensuring the best possible care for autistic individuals and responding effectively during emergencies,” said Myron Pincomb, Chairman of IBCCES. “We’re proud to partner with them and recognize their commitment as a Certified Autism Center™.”
Since 2001, IBCCES has led the way in training and certifying professionals to support individuals with autism, neurodiversity, and cognitive disorders across healthcare, education, and corporate sectors. Their programs, specifically tailored for police and fire departments, are designed to address the unique needs of underserved communities. Training incorporates insights from subject matter experts and autistic self-advocates, along with long-term support and continuous education.
