Two siblings who went missing from Ohio in October were located and found unharmed in a village in Iceland this month.
According to a statement from the U.S. Marshals Service, a family member reported the disappearance of two children, aged 8 and 9, to the Canton, Ohio police on October 25th.
The missing persons report states that the children, whose identities have not been disclosed, went missing when their mother ceased taking her medication for mental health.
According to the statement, the woman, who is 34 years old, reportedly left her apartment and as a result, the children no longer attended school.
The U.S. Marshals Service reported that the children were initially traced to Denver, Colorado. However, further investigation revealed that the woman and her children had traveled to London, England.
The police managed to track them down to the island of Jersey in the English Channel, which is located over 200 miles to the south of London. From there, the woman reportedly took the children to a secluded fishing village in Iceland, which is situated more than 2,500 miles away from Jersey.
The local Icelandic authorities were able to locate the children at a motel in the capital city of Reykjavik. However, the name of the village where the children were originally from has not been released.
Authorities confirmed that the children were found safe and have been placed under the care of Icelandic social services. They will remain in their custody until they are reunited with trusted family members.
The mother has been hospitalized and will be brought back to the U.S. after she recovers. It is not clear at the moment whether she will face any charges.
