Authorities reported that a tragic incident occurred on Sunday on the 134 Freeway in Pasadena, resulting in the loss of two lives and injuries to four individuals.
The incident took place on the westbound lanes at North San Rafael Avenue around 8 a.m.
According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, a vehicle entered the freeway from the San Rafael Avenue off-ramp and started driving in the wrong direction, heading eastbound in the westbound lanes near the 210 Freeway at Fair Oaks Avenue.
According to Lisa Derderian, a public information officer for the city of Pasadena, the collision involved at least four vehicles.
According to her, the wrong-way driver was one of the individuals who lost their lives, although their identity has not yet been disclosed.
According to Derderian, the crash involved only the wrong-way driver who was in their vehicle at the time.
Another individual tragically lost their life while being transported to the medical facility. However, the authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of this particular victim.
In the meantime, three other individuals sustained moderate injuries, while one person only suffered minor injuries.
According to Derderian, several victims involved in the incident included a mother and her teenage daughter, as well as a father and his teenage son. However, the specific details regarding their conditions have not been released at this time.
The California Highway Patrol officers had to close the area for several hours to clear the wreckage. ABC7 managed to capture at least three vehicles that were wrecked and left on the side of the road.
During the crash, a witness observed a vehicle engulfed in flames.
A helicopter employed thermal imaging technology to ensure that there were no individuals thrown out of the vehicles.
Authorities are currently conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.
