Woman Who Abandoned Boy with Brain Injury in Woods with No Food or Water Avoids Jail Time

A 31-year-old woman from Scotland has managed to escape imprisonment after leaving a nine-year-old boy alone in a dark wooded area without any provisions, resulting in severe injuries and long-lasting health issues for the child.

Ashley McGovern took the boy to Brock Wood near Spott, East Lothian on September 9, 2022.

According to BBC, a massive 24-hour search was launched involving 80 police officers, mountain rescue teams, and coastguard personnel when she left him alone in the woods.

During this time, she made false claims about his disappearance and deceived the authorities. The young boy, who had been exposed to cocaine and alcohol before the incident, was eventually discovered by a concerned dog walker. He was in a distressed state, with brain injuries and other physical trauma.

She was given a three-year community payback order, 300 hours of unpaid work, and mandatory progress reviews, despite the seriousness of the charges and her initial attempts to obstruct justice.

The young boy had to undergo a long period of hospitalization and rehabilitation, enduring over four months of recovery. He continues to confront persistent physical and neurological difficulties, which may lead to permanent weakness on one side of his body.

McGovern, on the other hand, will continue to be monitored as part of her sentence, with a strong emphasis on ongoing drug rehabilitation and mental health treatment.
