Winter Storm in Arizona: Up to 14 inches of snow anticipated by Friday Morning

A powerful winter storm is expected to hit northern and eastern Arizona between Thursday afternoon and late Thursday night, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions. Above 6,000 feet, including the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains, snow accumulation could range from 3 to 14 inches.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Flagstaff, a Winter Weather Advisory is in force until 11 a.m. Wednesday for areas above 7,000 feet, including Flagstaff, Williams, and Forest Lakes. These areas may receive a further 1 to 7 inches of snow before conditions temporarily improve. However, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Thursday afternoon, with the storm predicted to produce substantial snow and severe winds of up to 50 mph.

We anticipate similar circumstances for the White Mountains, including Show Low, Pinetop, and Greer. Snowfall accumulations could exceed 14 inches in the higher elevations, with strong winds causing blowing and drifting snow, further decreasing visibility.

Authorities are asking residents and visitors to exercise caution. We expect roads, especially bridges and overpasses, to become slippery and dangerous. The Arizona Department of Transportation recommends monitoring road conditions at az511.gov before traveling and packing a winter survival kit with blankets, food, and emergency supplies.

If conditions worsen, those planning to travel to vulnerable areas should monitor new forecasts and consider postponing their trips. Heavy snow and severe winds can cause power outages and damaged trees.
