A bill has been introduced by a Tennessee state lawmaker, proposing that law enforcement should send illegal migrants who are accused of minor crimes to sanctuary cities instead of deporting them to another country.

State Representative Todd Warner, a Republican, has introduced a bill named the Tennessee Illegal Immigration Act in anticipation of the upcoming legislative session. The bill aims to establish a requirement for all law enforcement agencies to promptly report any illegal immigrants they encounter to the federal immigration authorities.

According to Warner, the cost of sending migrants to a sanctuary city could potentially be lower for the state compared to deporting them back to their home countries. This is because the federal government may eventually bear the expenses of deportation.

According to him, the objective of the bill is to enhance safety in Tennessee and hold the federal government accountable for enforcing immigration laws. Additionally, the bill aims to allow the state to recover some of the costs associated with immigration.

If ICE fails to appear within 48 hours to pick up an illegal migrant who is detained, the law enforcement will assist in sending them to a sanctuary city, according to the bill. Senator Warner stated that the agency making the arrest will be in charge of relocating the detained migrants.

According to Warner, the funding for this initiative will come from the money Tennessee generates for the federal government through the gas tax.

The lawmaker intends to include an amendment that will clarify the scope of the bill, specifying that it will only be applicable to illegal migrants who have been charged with a minor offense. It is important to note that individuals with a history of violent crimes will still be eligible for deportation.

Greg Abbott strongly condemns the migrant who is accused of setting a Texas home on fire while children were inside and urges for their immediate capture and deportation.

Under the Tennessee Illegal Immigration Act, law enforcement would assist in sending detained illegal migrants to a sanctuary city if ICE fails to show up within 48 hours.

According to Fox 17, Warner stressed that this approach is intended for victimless crimes and not for individuals who have committed severe offenses.

According to Hannah Smalley, the Advocacy and Education Manager at Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors, the proposal would needlessly separate migrant families.

According to Fox 17, she explained that the simple act of being separated from your family can have a detrimental impact. This implies that individuals, even those who have not been accused of any wrongdoing, will face harsh consequences solely due to their immigration status.

“When U.S. citizens engage in criminal activities, they are held accountable by either paying a fine or serving a jail sentence,” she emphasized. “Immigrants, too, are subject to the same consequences. Therefore, it is counterproductive to focus solely on someone’s immigration status, as it is unrelated to any crimes they may have committed. This approach fails to benefit our community as a whole.”

Warner expressed his intention to refine the bill further, with the expectation of garnering bipartisan backing in the legislature.
