Teen gunman accused of attempting to steal mail truck couldn’t shift gears to drive away

Port Arthur police caught a teenage gunman who allegedly attempted to steal a mail truck but couldn’t figure out how to shift the gears and drive away.

Kenyon Washington, 18, of Port Arthur, is in jail on charges of aggravated robbery. Magistrate Marc DeRouen placed the bond at $50,000.

DeRouen gave the affidavit for Washington’s arrest to KFDM/Fox 4 News.

According to the affidavit, the investigation began around 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, when two officers responded to a robbery report in the 3500 block of 10th Street. Dispatchers informed the officers that a man wearing a light gray hoodie and black jeans was attempting to steal a mail carrier’s truck. As the officers approached the location, the dispatcher informed them that the suspect had fled.

One of the cops visited with the mailman. While she was at a mailbox, she spotted the man entering her car. She went back to the truck to stop him, but he had already locked the doors from the inside. However, he struggled to transfer gears and put the vehicle into drive.
