A double homicide suspect from California was apprehended after a civil traffic stop on a bicyclist in Yuma, Arizona (KYMA, KECY reported).
The Yuma Police Department (YPD) reported that an officer made an arrest on Monday at approximately 2:25 p.m. The arrest occurred during a traffic stop with a bicyclist near the intersection of W. 16th Street and E. Main Canal Road. The officer had pulled over the bicyclist for a civil traffic violation.
The YPD stated that the bicyclist, who was later identified as 43-year-old Danny Garibay, gave false information regarding his name and date of birth. He then fled on his bicycle, which led the officer to chase after him. Garibay eventually abandoned the bicycle and jumped over a wall into an apartment complex.
The officer apprehended Garibay, who continued to resist giving his “identifying information.” According to YPD, Garibay was found with “a small amount of methamphetamine and a pistol with a serial number that had been altered.”
After being apprehended, Garibay was transferred to Yuma Sector Border Patrol for identification. It was during this process that YPD discovered that he had an outstanding arrest warrant from Atwater, California. The warrant was related to a double murder that took place in October of 2023.
According to YPD, Garibay is currently in custody at the Yuma County Detention Center for multiple offenses and is awaiting extradition to California.
