Suburban Woman Dies Following Son Sledgehammer Attack: Prosecutors

A tragic incident occurred in Burr Ridge, where a suburban woman lost her life just two days after being attacked by her own son with a mini sledgehammer, as confirmed by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Oscar Rodriguez, aged 37, is facing charges of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery. Prosecutors have stated that these charges are in connection with the death of his mother, Virna Rodriguez. During a court hearing on Monday, Oscar Rodriguez was present, but the judge denied his request for pre-trial release.

Authorities responded to a distress call at the family’s residence on Friday evening. The location was on South Madison Street, specifically in the 9100 block. Upon arrival, officers found Virna seated on the ground, with a noticeable injury to the left side of her head.

Prosecutors say that Virna was vomiting blood and bleeding from her nose and head at the time. She was taken to a nearby hospital and proclaimed dead as a consequence of her injuries on Sunday afternoon.

During the investigation, a person who was inside the house at the time claimed she first heard Virna scream. When she went to investigate, she discovered Virna sitting at the table, bleeding, with her kid standing behind her.

Oscar then recognized the woman and chased her upstairs, causing her to lock herself in a bedroom. He then broke into the woman’s bedroom, prompting her to lock herself in the bathroom. Prosecutors say Oscar Rodriguez momentarily hammered on the bathroom door before exiting the scene.

Illinois State Police arrested him shortly after the event.

While investigating the site, authorities discovered a tiny sledgehammer in the bushes near the front walkway, which seemed to be covered in blood. The snow around the hammer was also spotted with what seemed to be blood.

Oscar’s next court appearance is slated for March 13.
