Skyline Drive Reopens Amid Icy Conditions in Shenandoah National Park
Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park reopened Monday afternoon as improving conditions made travel safer. However, with temperatures expected to plunge below freezing again on Monday and Tuesday nights, officials caution that partial closures may be necessary if icy conditions return.
The scenic route, which stretches through the park, had previously been closed between the Thornton Gap Entrance Station and the Swift Run Gap Entrance Station due to hazardous icy roads.
The National Park Service warns that weather conditions along Skyline Drive can shift rapidly, posing potential risks to drivers. Visitors are advised to reduce speeds below the already-lowered limit of 35 miles per hour to ensure their safety.
Park officials emphasize remaining vigilant as freezing temperatures continue to pose challenges in the days ahead.
