Sentences Handed Down for Tucson Men Who Planned to Travel to the Middle East and Join ISIS

Ahmed Mahad Mohamed, 27, and Abdi Yemeni Hussein, 26, citizens of Somalia residing in Tucson at the time of the offense, received their sentences last week from Chief United States District Judge Jennifer G. Zipps. Mohamed was handed a 132-month prison term, while Hussein was given a 96-month prison term, along with a lifetime of supervised release. Chief Judge Zipps also ordered their removal from the United States to Somalia after their imprisonment. On August 1, 2024, both defendants pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Provide Material Support and Resources to a Designated Foreign Terrorist Organization, specifically the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).

The investigation in this case was carried out by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. The prosecution was handled by the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.
