Prominent Oregon Businessman’s Son Sentenced to Jail for Lavish Spending as Father Remains in Vegetative State

The Clackamas County Court judge has sentenced the son of the former long-standing president of the Northwest Grocers Association in Oregon and Washington to 30 months in jail. Additionally, he has been ordered to repay his father $372,000. This comes after his father fell into a vegetative state as a result of being poisoned.

Father was Poisoned with Rare and Toxic Thallium

Court records reveal that Earl Joe Gilliam III (35) indulged in extravagant spending following his father’s poisoning with thallium, a rare toxic metal, which left him in a vegetative state.

Over the next few months, Gilliam III indulged in a spending spree, splurging $59,000 on a Jeep Gladiator and withdrawing $120,000 from a bank in Oak Grove. He used this money for gambling, traveling, and enjoying a good deal of liquor.

Judge Rules that Son Does Not Deserve Probation

Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Jones determined that Gilliam III, despite being the likely heir, had no justification to utilize funds that could have been allocated towards his quadriplegic father’s healthcare expenses. The judge concluded that Gilliam did not merit probation as a result of this circumstance.

Gilliam III previously admitted guilt to charges of first-degree criminal mistreatment and aggravated theft.
