According to police and court records, an intoxicated driver collided head-on with a vehicle, resulting in the tragic death of a recently married husband and wife on Saturday morning.
According to a spokesman from the New Jersey State Police, a 25-year-old man from Atlantic City was driving east on Route 552/Mays Landing Road near Ingersol Avenue in Maurice River Township when his car crossed the centerline and crashed into a car driven by 57-year-old Thomas Splinter, who was traveling west.
The troopers arrived at the scene just before 4:15 a.m.
Splinter and Nancy Orellana-Splinter, 29, from Mays Landing, tragically lost their lives due to their injuries, as confirmed by the police.
The other driver sustained moderate injuries.
According to municipal court records, the motorist who survived the accident received citations for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, and making an unsafe lane change.
The issuance of those citations was confirmed by a spokesperson from the State Police.
As of Monday morning, there were no criminal charges listed in the Superior Court records regarding this case.
According to a post on Nancy Orellana-Splinter’s Facebook page, the victims got married in September.
Police said they are still investigating the crash.
