A suspect wanted in a deadly overnight crime spree in the Northland was shot and killed by local and federal authorities Friday morning.
According to Platte County Sheriff Capt. Jeffrey Shanks, law enforcement received a call at 11:15 p.m. Thursday regarding a gunshot at a car wash at the intersection of Vivion Road and NW High Drive.
Shanks alleges that the defendant, George C. Manning, shot and murdered an innocent woman driving a Hyundai at the car wash.
Manning stole the Hyundai and drove it to a nearby home in the 4400 block of NW 50th.
Manning opened fire on a juvenile boy and an adult female who were inside the home. The injuries claimed the life of the young youngster. On Friday morning, the adult female received treatment at a nearby hospital.
Manning abducted a 5-year-old girl before fleeing the house. According to police, the adult female is the mother of the deceased boy and the kidnapped 5-year-old child.
Authorities issued an Amber Alert early Friday morning following the abduction.
As authorities searched for Manning and the girl, it is thought the two went to Kansas in the stolen Hyundai.
Capt. Shanks stated during a news conference on Friday morning that Manning eventually gave the 5-year-old daughter to one of his relatives.
When officials learned that the girl was safe, they canceled the Amber Alert and focused on finding Manning.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, members of the region’s career criminal task force discovered Manning shortly after 7 a.m. wandering down Vivion Road, not far from where he shot and killed the woman at the car wash.
According to a highway patrol spokesperson, police from the Kansas City Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations agents discovered Manning equipped with a firearm.
Police eventually shot Manning, who died instantly.
“It’s been a very long night,” Shanks remarked late Friday morning.
