A man who was recently released from prison has been accused of breaking into an apartment in northwest Oklahoma City. According to the police, the resident of the apartment shot John Adame, a 37-year-old man, on Tuesday night after he forcefully kicked in her front door.
According to the victim and a witness, they were both unfamiliar with Adame. The witness speculated that Adame may have been seeking refuge from the cold weather, but things took a violent turn when her next-door neighbor refused to open the door.
Breeann Wetselline, a neighbor, expressed her fear, stating, “It was scary because this apartment is usually quiet.”
Breeann Wetselline and her husband were first greeted by 37-year-old John Adame outside their front door.
“We heard snoring, so we opened the door and found him lying right here,” Wetselline recalled. “At first, we didn’t think much of it since we have had homeless people sleep here before.”
The couple decided not to contact security or the police when they first encountered Adame due to the cold weather. However, their perspective changed shortly after.
Wetselline recounted, “Suddenly, we heard someone attempting to open our door.”
Adame proceeded to knock on her neighbor’s door.
According to Wetselline, the man was shouting, cursing, and directing racial slurs at her, while threatening to break into her house. Wetselline immediately contacted the police, informing them about the situation and emphasizing the presence of children at the location.
“He turned and ran,” said Msgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department. “Officers found him a very short time later in an adjacent building when he was taken into custody. He was seriously wounded, had to be taken to surgery once he was at the hospital.”
Adame managed to survive the shooting, and neighbors affirmed their willingness to take similar actions in order to protect their own homes.
“Don’t be trying to break into people’s doors,” said Wetselline. “She said she warned him like, you know, ‘I have a gun.’”
Adame is expected to be taken into custody at the Oklahoma County Detention Center once he has been discharged from the hospital. Records from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections indicate that Adame served a sentence of less than a year in prison for a grand larceny offense in Carter County.
