A North Liberty rapist, Asante Ajee Walker-Garcia Adams, was confronted by his victim in court this week as he received a 100-year prison sentence.
The woman from Cedar Falls expressed her disgust and disbelief in court on Monday, describing the crimes as both dehumanizing and sickening. She compared them to something out of a horror story, but acknowledged that it takes a similarly twisted mind to carry out such heinous acts.
“You didn’t consider your wife and child when you committed this act, did you? No, it’s clear that you didn’t. In order to do so, you would have had to recognize them as individuals as well,” she remarked.
In addition to the recent sentencing, he has also been charged with a similar offense in Iowa City back in June 2022. Furthermore, there is an existing arrest warrant for an attempted rape that occurred in Center Point in May 2023. Detectives from Iowa City were present at the sentencing that took place in Black Hawk County court on Monday.
The victim from Cedar Falls opened up about the aftermath of the attack, expressing her ongoing sense of insecurity. She revealed that she now relies on six different medications to cope with post-traumatic stress, as well as additional painkillers to manage the nerve damage caused by the assault.
Both women are hopeful that Walker will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Judge David Odekirk handed down the maximum penalty to Walker, sentencing him to 25 years for each charge. These sentences are to be served consecutively, resulting in a total of 100 years. Walker will have to serve 35 years before becoming eligible for parole. Even if released, he will be placed on lifetime parole and will be required to register as a sex offender.
Walker, in his plea for leniency, asked for concurrent sentences, which would have resulted in a reduced term of 25 years. He expressed remorse for his actions and acknowledged the gravity of his mistakes. “I have had time to reflect on my actions while awaiting trial,” he stated. “I deeply regret my actions and want to apologize to those I have harmed. I understand that I cannot undo the consequences of what has occurred.”
According to Prosecutor Heather Jackson, the victims have expressed their fear that Walker could pose a threat to others if he is released. She emphasized that they are genuinely concerned for the safety of other individuals.
In January, Walker is set to go on trial in Johnson County for the assault that took place in Iowa City in June 2022. As per the police reports, a man unlawfully entered the victim’s home, physically attacked her by punching, and then covered her head with a sheet.
Iowa City police shared surveillance footage of the suspect, which ultimately led to the identification of Walker. Upon searching his phone, they discovered messages from his wife who had recognized him in a University of Iowa Hawk Alert and a news article featuring doorbell video footage of the suspect.
Walker is facing multiple charges in the Center Point case, which include third-degree kidnapping, second-degree robbery, assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, and false imprisonment. The investigators were able to link Walker to the crime scene through a fingerprint match.
