In a heart-wrenching incident in Missouri, a young mother, A. Wehmeyer, aged 21, has been accused of neglect that led to the death of her 1-year-old child. Wehmeyer’s actions revealed distressing negligence, as she failed to provide proper nourishment and care for her toddler, ultimately resulting in the tragic loss of the child due to dehydration and malnutrition.
The Missouri Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control investigated the death and described the events that led up to the fatal incident. Wehmeyer faced detention on February 28 due to her child’s unusual death. According to the autopsy reports, the youngster died of dehydration and severe malnutrition, with little to no food in his stomach. Wehmeyer’s neglect occurred over a key 43-hour period during which she neglected to provide necessary care and sustenance to her infant. According to the probable cause affidavit, the mother last fed her kid between 5 and 6 p.m. on February 26. Notably, the baby did not show signs of distress until approximately 36 hours had passed. The following evening, around 24 hours after the previous feeding, Wehmeyer changed the baby’s diaper and put him to bed.
The situation worsened in the early hours of February 28, when Wehmeyer responded to her wailing baby for 30 to 40 minutes before returning the youngster to bed. Later that day, around 1 p.m., she discovered the infant unresponsive with blue lips, indicating oxygen deprivation. During the police questioning, Wehmeyer admitted that, despite noting the baby’s distressed condition on February 27, she chose not to seek medical attention owing to a headache and instead took a nap. This decision was made despite obvious serious signs such as “severe blisters” from diaper rash, which she admitted to spotting roughly 19 hours before the baby’s estimated time of death.
Prosecutors charged Wehmeyer with child abuse or neglect that resulted in death. She is currently being held at the county prison on a $100,000 cash bond, with her first court appearance set for March 6. Throughout the investigation, Wehmeyer did not seek medical advice or treatment for the baby’s malnutrition or acute diaper rash, exacerbating the neglect.
Given that the tragedy may have been avoided, the community and government have responded forcefully to this case. The fatality has raised questions about parental duties and the support mechanisms required to prevent similar situations. With no prior criminal record, Wehmeyer’s actions have been questioned in light of a sad ending that may have been averted with quick medical intervention and competent treatment.
