Mexico is taking action in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s threats of massive deportations by announcing its plans to open 25 migrant shelters exclusively for Mexican citizens, according to a report by the New York Post.
The doors of each venue are set to open on January 20th, which is Inauguration Day, and they will have a capacity of 500 people. Baja California Governor, Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, is paying close attention to Trump’s promises of immigrant deportations on the first day of his second term. Olmeda believes that this time Trump will be even more strict and tough on deportations, as he had made similar threats throughout his campaign and now holds the position of President of the United States.
“We are actively preparing to welcome and support our migrant population… Our strategic plan focuses on providing assistance specifically to individuals who have been deported after January 20th.”
Plans are underway to establish shelters across the country, providing over 12,000 beds exclusively for Mexican citizens who have been repatriated. However, these shelters will not accommodate deported migrants from other countries. According to data from Border Report, five shelters will be strategically located in the vicinity of San Diego, which is recognized as one of the most active regions for illegal crossings between the United States and Mexico. Additionally, two more shelters will be established in the southern part of El Centro, California.
“These shelters are intended for repatriated individuals who are returning from the northern region to the southern region. It is important to clarify that these shelters are exclusively for Mexicans and not for foreigners. We want to emphasize that Mexicans will be warmly welcomed back to their country, and their human rights will be fully respected,” the governor clarified.
The designated buildings will accommodate individuals based on their gender and whether they are unaccompanied children or families. However, their stay will be limited to just a few days before they are transported back to their original hometowns.
According to the Washington Times, Trump and his border patrol team, which includes border czar Tom Homan and Homeland Security Secretary nominee, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, have made a commitment to initiate the most extensive mass deportation of illegal criminals in American history.
Karoline Leavitt, the newly appointed White House press secretary, announced that President Biden intends to fulfill his campaign promises to secure the southern border by utilizing the power of executive action. Leavitt stated that President Biden may employ various strategies, including the implementation of Title 42, a legislation signed during Trump’s tenure, which permits officials to reject migrants on the grounds of COVID-19 concerns.
The new president is under the impression that Mexico supports his immigration plan. In November 2024, he stated that Mexico’s newly-elected President, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, had pledged to “halt migration.” However, Sheinbaum Pardo presented a contrasting perspective. On X, she expressed, “During my discussion with President Trump, I detailed Mexico’s comprehensive approach to addressing the migration issue while upholding human rights.”
