Approximately two years after reportedly being pulled over on I-40 with an RV full of drugs, the United States Marshals Service apprehended a man approximately 2,300 miles (ca. 3,701 km) away.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Walter Leonard Smalls, 69, in May 2023 when a deputy pulled over his RV on I-40 for a traffic violation, according to the Marshals Service. According to the Marshals Service, the van included 437 pounds of vacuum-sealed marijuana, 800 THC cartridges, 84 mushroom chocolate bars, 27 edible mushroom packages, 24 packs of THC delicacies, and approximately one pound of THC wax.
Smalls was later released on bond, but he failed to appear at a Madison County court date in August 2024, according to the Marshals.
A tip led investigators to Smalls’ native state of Oregon, and on May 18, 2025, a task force discovered him at a house in Wolf Creek, Oregon.
