Prosecutors charged a man with attempting to kidnap a random 13-year-old boy off a Humboldt Park street last week, barely one week after being placed on electronic monitoring for allegedly selling drugs a block away.
Devontay Kenny, 32, approached the youngster in the 3800 block of West Thomas on February 24 and asked if he could take him to school, saying something along the lines of “I like little boys and girls.”
According to officials, the youngster refused, and Kenny pinned him against the brick wall of a nearby house. After battling with Kenny, the child broke free and went to a nearby convenience shop for assistance, according to a detention petition submitted by prosecutors.
Judge Shauna Boliker allowed the petition, noting that Kenny allegedly followed the child for several blocks and attempted to convince bystanders that he was the boy’s uncle.
Prosecutors charged Kenny with attempted kidnapping, wrongful restraint, and aggravated violence in a public place.
According to court records, exactly one week before he allegedly attempted to abduct the boy, Judge Susana Ortiz placed Kenny on a nighttime curfew with an electronic monitoring bracelet after cops accused him of distributing heroin and cocaine in the 3100 block of West Harrison and the 1100 block of North Pulaski.
Kenny has many felony narcotics convictions, including one in 2017 for aggravated robbery.
