A fatal crash on I-25 near Monument caused major delays on Wednesday, but the northbound lanes have since reopened.
The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) responded to the scene at approximately 10:35 a.m. after receiving reports of a two-car collision between a Jeep and a Subaru on northbound I-25, between Monument and West Baptist Road. Following the crash, both drivers moved their vehicles to the left shoulder and exited their cars to exchange information.
While they were on the shoulder, a pickup truck collided with the vehicles involved in the original crash. The force of the impact caused the Subaru to strike one of the drivers, who was thrown into the southbound lanes of the interstate. Tragically, the driver was hit by oncoming traffic and pronounced dead at the scene.
CSP confirmed that one driver involved in the crash remained at the location, but they believe other drivers who may have been involved left the scene.
As a result of the incident, all northbound lanes of I-25 were shut down, and southbound lanes were reduced to one lane. However, by 2 p.m., all lanes were reopened.
The name of the deceased individual will be released by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office. Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information to contact CSP dispatch at 719-544-2424.
