Law and Order Committee grants $34.25 million for judicial infrastructure and improves emergency response coordination

The Law and Order Committee (LOC) of the Navajo Nation Council concluded its meeting on December 23 with significant legislative action. One of the major outcomes was the unanimous approval of $34,250,516 in funding. This funding will be utilized to enhance the judicial and public safety infrastructure across the Navajo Nation.

Legislation No. 0259-24, which is sponsored by Council Delegate Eugenia Charles-Newton, aims to allocate resources from the Hashkééjí Nahata’á Béeso Bá Hooghan Fund in order to provide support for six essential projects within the Judicial Branch.

The funding that has been approved will facilitate the construction of the Aneth Judicial District Court, the establishment of the Administrative Offices of the Courts Warehouse, improvements for the Ramah Judicial District, the expansion of the Kayenta Training Program, and the creation of new facilities for the Peacemaking Program Building. These projects have been carefully planned to improve access to justice and enhance public safety services throughout the Navajo Nation.

Delegate Charles-Newton, the Chair of the Law and Order Committee, commended the legislation as a substantial leap forward for the Navajo Nation.

“This funding is essential for ensuring that our judicial and public safety systems are fully equipped to meet the needs of our communities,” Charles-Newton emphasized.

“We are confident that the approved projects will enhance our ability to provide justice and enhance safety for the Navajo people.”

The committee also talked about getting ready for the upcoming legislatures of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, which are set to take place in January 2025.

Advocating for additional funding for public safety facilities and infrastructure projects, and fostering collaboration with state and federal partners will be the focus of these upcoming events. Charles-Newton highlighted the significance of these legislative initiatives, underscoring that they are in line with the committee’s ongoing dedication to enhancing safety and justice services for the Navajo Nation.

The Law and Order Committee has scheduled its next meeting for Jan. 6, 2025. During this meeting, the committee will carry on with its discussions regarding emergency management, infrastructure development, and other important legislative priorities.

“We are committed to our mission of improving public safety and ensuring access to justice for our community,” stated Charles Newton. “Although there is still much work to be done, we are making significant progress towards building a stronger and more resilient Navajo Nation.”

The Law and Order Committee unanimously approved Legislation 0259-34, with two votes in favor and none opposed. The committee’s decision serves as the final authority on this legislation.
