Lake Effect Snow Dumps Inches Across Great Lakes, 7 States Under Alerts

Lake effect snow is impacting the Great Lakes region, with seven states from Wisconsin to New York under snow advisories on Monday. Snow totals have already reached significant amounts: 65 inches in Barnes Corners, New York; 30 inches in Erie, Pennsylvania; 56 inches in Saybrook, Ohio; and 42 inches in Gaylord, Michigan. Orchard Park, New York, home to the Buffalo Bills, has received 26 inches of snow so far. The Bills managed to play through the snow on Sunday, defeating the San Francisco 49ers 35-10.

A lake effect snow warning is in place from Jamestown, New York, through Erie to Cleveland, where some regions could accumulate an additional 6 to 20 inches of snow. In Syracuse, New York, an additional 4 to 7 inches are expected in the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, in Michigan, a winter storm warning continues as intense snow bands continue to affect the western part of the state.

A crash involving 14 passenger vehicles and three semi trucks occurred on Interstate 94 near Hartford, Michigan, with one driver in critical condition. The snow created whiteout conditions, leading to the shutdown of the interstate. Northern Indiana is forecast to see up to 12 inches of snow, while northern Wisconsin is expected to receive 5 inches.

The heaviest lake effect snow should end by Tuesday morning across most of the Great Lakes region.
