A woman from Jackson has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting her guilt in the shooting death of Kiona Morgan.
Augena Funches recently admitted her guilt in relation to the 2019 murder case and pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter.
Initially, she faced charges of first-degree murder.
She is currently detained at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility.
The shooting took place in Clinton in 2019.
In a report by WLBT, it was mentioned that the Clinton Police received a distress call regarding an incident at a residence on Thompson Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered that Morgan had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. She was immediately transported to the hospital by private vehicle, but unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries later on.
Funches faced an indictment during that month, but it remains uncertain when he was able to secure his release on bond.
According to court records, she received a bond of $50,000 in July 2019.
While Funches was out on bond, she allegedly became involved in another crime in 2021 – the shooting death of Kiana Singleton.
The incident took place on Ridgewood Court Road, where court documents reveal that Funches shot Singleton while standing on the side door seal of a Range Rover.
Singleton met his untimely demise in the 2100 block of Wandering Way, where he was discovered with fatal injuries.
In November 2021, Funches was indicted for drive-by shooting and first-degree murder in connection to that particular case.
The trial date for the Singleton case was initially set for May 2, 2022.
The trial date had been rescheduled seven times as of October 2, 2024. However, on December 10, it was once again rescheduled, this time for March 10, 2025. A status hearing is scheduled for February 10.
