Intruder shot dead during house invasion; homeowner injured in gunfire exchange

Rochester police discovered Zhymar Thacker, 22, dead from numerous gunshot wounds at 289 Emerson Street on Sunday at 5:25 a.m.

The homeowner, another man, sustained a gunshot wound to his torso. The hospital treated him and released him with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, the homeowner was sleeping upstairs in the same room with numerous other family members early Sunday morning because they had only moved into the residence the night before.

The sound of someone kicking in a first-floor door woke the family. Armed with a handgun, the adult male left the room, and several voices echoed downstairs. On the landing, he encountered Thacker, one of the individuals who had broken into the house. Two men traded gunshots.

Thacker died, and the homeowner is recovering from a gunshot wound.
