Indiana police department faces legal action from state attorney general over immigration enforcement

Indiana’s attorney general has recently taken action against a police department regarding immigration enforcement.

On Friday, Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita took legal action against the agency and Sheriff William Redman, the head of the St. Joseph County Police Department.

The lawsuit was filed in South Bend, as Attorney General Rokita emphasized the importance of law enforcement officials in Indiana being compliant and actively contributing to putting an end to the illegal alien crisis that is impacting Hoosier communities.

On Friday, the St. Joseph County Police Department addressed the allegations on social media. They stated that the Sheriff has indeed spoken to Rokita and clarified that the department does cooperate with ICE.

The Indiana Attorney General once again surprised us by holding a press conference before informing us about the lawsuit. It’s worth noting that, as of now, we haven’t even received a copy of the lawsuit.

Todd Rokita falsely claimed that he had multiple conversations with Sheriff Redman. However, in reality, Sheriff Redman has never even spoken to Todd Rokita.

“We regularly communicate with ICE, contrary to his false claim that we do not cooperate with them,” he clarified. He further explained that whenever the jail receives a detainer or request from ICE, the staff promptly informs the immigration officials about the scheduled release of the individual for detainment on their criminal charges.”

The Attorney General is reminded that there is no legal obligation for the Sheriff or the Jail to enforce federal immigration laws, whether at the state or federal level. The Sheriff and the department consistently adhere to all state and federal laws and will, regrettably, be compelled to defend themselves in court against the State of Indiana.

We take immense pride in our strong partnerships with various federal law enforcement agencies. These include the FBI, DEA, ATF, DOJ, ICE, US Marshals, and the US Attorney. Together, we remain dedicated to ensuring the safety of St. Joseph County.
