Idaho House Passes Bill And Limit The Use Of Snap Benefits

The Idaho House of Representatives has successfully passed a bill on Monday, aimed at imposing limitations on the purchase of unhealthy snacks and beverages, such as soda and candy, through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Formerly known as food stamps, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) aims to assist families in need with providing for their households. Advocates of this change are of the opinion that it will promote healthier food choices and contribute to the overall improvement of America’s health.

According to the bill’s Statement of Purpose, “Food stamps are currently fueling the junk food epidemic, with soda ranking as the number one commodity bought with food stamps. Taxpayers are funding a growing health crisis, including childhood obesity. Banning soda and candy from food stamps would prioritize health and nutrition while also reducing taxpayer’s out-of-control Medicaid costs.”

In February, House Bill 109 was initially introduced and later passed with a vote of 38 to 32.
