Up to 10 mysterious drones have been recently spotted above an air base in Germany’s southern state of Bavaria, authorities confirmed on Monday.
The investigators have not dismissed the possibility of espionage as a motive behind the drone flights. They are considering the connection between these flights and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
On Sunday evening, at least ten drones were detected flying above Manching Air Base near the city of Ingolstadt, according to Bavaria’s State Criminal Police Office (LKA).
In December, there were similar incidents reported in Manching and the nearby town of Neuburg an der Donau. According to the LKA, it is believed that the operators of these drones are attempting to capture images of military installations.
The investigation will now be handled by the Munich Public Prosecutor General’s Office, as announced later on Monday.
Manching is utilized to assess the airworthiness of newly procured aircraft for the German military.
In December, unidentified drones were observed flying over Ramstein, the US air base located in Germany.
