Temperatures across the UK are set to drop below freezing Monday night, with a return to seasonal averages by Tuesday, following a mild weekend, according to the Met Office.
After some areas enjoyed temperatures above 16°C on Sunday, colder weather is expected to take hold on Monday night. The temperature will briefly dip below freezing before returning to normal levels on Tuesday.
Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna stated, “Monday night is likely to be the coldest, with temperatures possibly reaching minus 8°C in parts of Scotland, particularly in higher elevations where snow is expected.” He added that temperatures in Scotland could reach minus 3°C on Tuesday night, and parts of England may see lows of minus 2°C or minus 3°C by Tuesday morning.
This weekend’s unseasonably mild temperatures reached as high as 16.4°C in Cardiff, with warmer air brought in by winds from the south and southwest. “That’s about five degrees above average for this time of year,” said Petagna, noting that temperatures typically range between 10°C and 12°C.
However, a shift in winds on Monday will bring colder air from the north, leading to a brief cold spell. Petagna assured that the cold will be short-lived, with milder conditions expected to return by Tuesday afternoon as the winds shift back from the Atlantic.
Looking ahead, he mentioned that there is a possibility of another drop in temperatures next weekend as northerly winds are forecast to develop.
