Mexican authorities have reportedly thwarted the building of a potential drug tunnel into Arizona.
The entrance to the tunnel can be found in San Luis, Rio Colorado, south of Yuma, just across the U.S.-Mexico border.
The State Public Secretary Secretariat of Sonora shared images of the tunnel on their Facebook page.
In a recent operation carried out by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, a tunnel was discovered. Utilizing a drone, authorities were able to identify the tunnel’s location just south of the border wall.
Mexican authorities have reported that the tunnel was in its initial stages and is believed to be a “narco tunnel.” The purpose of this tunnel was likely to facilitate the smuggling of drugs or people under the border wall and into the United States.
The Sinaloa drug cartel utilizes tunnels similar to these throughout the southwest, as stated in the DEA’s 2024 drug threat assessment.
Some of these structures are highly sophisticated, equipped with electricity and air vents.
Mexican authorities have reported the discovery of the third tunnel in the Yuma area this year.
The Yuma Border Patrol collaborates closely with Mexican authorities to combat border crime, although they do not possess any information regarding this particular tunnel.
