A new pilot program is being proposed in Northern Virginia, which could result in fines for drivers of excessively loud cars.
Arlington County is set to implement a pilot program that will closely monitor the noise levels of car exhausts. As part of the program, drivers who exceed the permissible noise limit will be subject to fines of up to $100.
The bill aims to grant permission to counties and cities in District 16 and District 8 to install and operate noise abatement monitoring systems. These systems would function similarly to speed cameras, but their purpose would be to detect and penalize violations related to vehicle exhaust systems. According to sources at FOX 5, the generated revenue from these violations would be allocated towards initiatives aimed at enhancing transportation safety.
According to reports, penalties will not be recorded on the driver’s operating record or insurance.
