A Gaithersburg man was taken into custody and is facing charges of gross negligence manslaughter. He was driving at a speed of 100 mph in a zone with a speed limit of 50 mph when he tragically collided with 28-year-old Juan Guerrero-Moreno. Juan was riding a lawn mower at a pedestrian crossing when the accident occurred.

According to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD), a 24-year-old man named Maxim Galkin from Gaithersburg has been arrested and charged with gross negligence manslaughter by vehicle. This charge is in connection with a fatal collision that occurred involving a pedestrian who was riding a lawn mower.

On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, officers from the Montgomery County Police 6th District and Gaithersburg Police, along with Fire Rescue personnel, swiftly responded to a collision at the intersection of Great Seneca Hwy. and High Gables Dr. The incident involved a black 2021 Genesis G70 and the operator of a riding lawn mower.

Juan Guerrero-Moreno, a 28-year-old resident of Silver Spring, was discovered lying motionless on the road. Despite efforts to save his life, Guerrero-Moreno suffered severe injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

According to the Collision Reconstruction Unit’s initial investigation, it was determined that Galkin was driving at approximately 100 mph in a 50-mph zone. Despite the presence of yellow warning signs indicating the presence of pedestrians and an upcoming intersection, Galkin’s sedan collided with the zero-turn riding lawn mower as Guerrero-Moreno was crossing the northbound lanes of Great Seneca Highway from west to east. It is worth noting that Galkin did stay at the scene after the accident occurred.

Galkin faced arrest on Tuesday, December 17, and was taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit. He was later released after posting a $100,000 unsecured personal bond.
