COTREX App Now Features Real-Time Avalanche Warnings for Backcountry Safety

The Colorado Trail Explorer (COTREX) app has been updated to include real-time avalanche forecasting from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC), making it easier for winter adventurers to access critical safety information.

This collaboration between CAIC and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) aims to enhance safety for those exploring Colorado’s mountains, especially in the backcountry.

In the 2023 winter season, Colorado experienced over 5,600 avalanches, resulting in 148 people being caught, 59 buried, 13 injured, and two fatalities. With avalanche conditions changing quickly, providing timely, accessible information is crucial.

While avalanche data has always been available on the CAIC website, integrating it into COTREX allows users to access it directly from their smartphones.

COTREX is a free app that provides offline maps and interactive mapping of over 50,000 miles of trails across Colorado, working in collaboration with land managers to ensure the inclusion of legally maintained trails.

The app, which can be downloaded by anyone, already includes information on trail conditions, and now, with the addition of CAIC’s daily avalanche forecasts and active warnings, it offers up-to-date information about snow conditions, avalanche risks, and safety alerts.

CPW Deputy Director Heather Disney Dugan emphasized the importance of sharing expert safety information to keep outdoor enthusiasts informed. CAIC Director Ethan Greene added that the new features empower users to make informed decisions and enjoy Colorado’s mountains with greater safety.

In addition to avalanche information, COTREX also includes real-time updates from over 40 agencies on topics like trail closures, wildfire alerts, and other hazards. The app is updated quarterly and also highlights winter trails suitable for activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

As winter approaches, adventurers are reminded to carry avalanche safety gear, including a beacon, shovel, and probe, when heading into the backcountry. For more information and to explore the app, visit the COTREX website.
