Colorado Springs Police Warn of Kidnapping Hoax
Colorado Springs, CO – The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) is warning the public about a recent wave of kidnapping hoaxes. In a 24-hour period between November 25th and 26th, the department received three separate reports of alleged kidnappings.
Upon investigation, CSPD determined that all three incidents were fabricated to extort money from victims’ families. In each case, scammers contacted family members, mimicking the voice of the supposed victim and demanding a ransom of $5,000, later reduced to $2,500. The scammers instructed families to deliver the money or transfer it electronically, sometimes falsely claiming to be cartel members.
CSPD urges the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution when receiving such calls. If contacted with a similar demand, authorities advise against complying with the scammers’ instructions. Instead, individuals should attempt to contact the alleged victim directly to verify their safety and immediately report the incident to CSPD at 911 or the non-emergency number (719) 444-7000.
