The accusation stemmed from a misguided belief by a fellow traveler who witnessed the interracial couple together and jumped to the erroneous conclusion that a crime was taking place.
In September 2022, Anthony Williams and Katsiaryna Shasholka, a newly married couple, were on an American Airlines flight 2408 from Phoenix, Arizona, to Miami. During the flight, a fellow passenger grew suspicious and reported the couple, who are of mixed race, to the cabin crew, according to the complaint.
According to the report, the passenger alleged that Williams, 63, was forcefully transporting Shasholka, 34, without her consent. The incident is being viewed as a clear case of racial profiling and unjust discrimination.
According to the complaint, crewmembers believed that there was no reason to think that Shasholka was in any danger. The complaint includes a selfie of the couple, showing them smiling and enjoying themselves during the flight. However, without conducting their own investigation, the crewmembers accepted the passenger’s statement and informed law enforcement that Williams was trafficking his own wife.
Upon landing, American Airlines employees falsely imprisoned our clients and escorted them off the plane. Our clients were left waiting, feeling confused and embarrassed, while other passengers deplaned and walked by them.
American Airlines Faces Bombshell Lawsuit Over Racial Profiling Allegations

They advised him to file a complaint online, but unfortunately, he has not received any response since then. The incident has had a lasting impact on both Williams and Shasholka, as she recently experienced a panic attack while they were traveling to Dubai.
“We had a great time throughout the entire flight, and there was no indication whatsoever that someone was being held against their will,” Williams stated. “Our interactions were simply two people enjoying each other’s company.”
Attorney Jasmine Rand, a renowned advocate for civil rights, has filed a lawsuit on behalf of Williams and Shasholka. Rand, who has previously represented the families of Trayvon Martin and George Floyd, is well-known for her commitment to fighting for justice in cases involving unarmed Black individuals who have been victims of violence.
Rand, speaking to The Independent, expressed his disbelief at the accusations against his client, a retired police officer. Having dedicated his life to fighting crime, it is inconceivable to him that his client would be involved in such a heinous act as trafficking his own wife. Rand emphasized his client’s commitment to seeking justice not only for himself but also for others who have experienced racial discrimination at the hands of American Airlines.
On Tuesday, there was no response from an American Airlines spokesperson when contacted for comment.

This action was prompted by a flight attendant who had called ahead expressing concerns about the children’s unresponsiveness during an interaction, questioning whether they were actually Harris’ biracial children.
American regretted what had happened and issued a statement expressing their sincere apology to the customer and their family. The flight attendant involved in the incident wanted to ensure that the customer knew about the apology and the airline’s remorse for the consequences of their actions.
In January 2024, three Black men who did not know each other and were not seated together faced an unfortunate incident on American flight 832 from Phoenix to New York City. The incident occurred when a white flight attendant complained about their “offensive body odor,” as mentioned in a lawsuit filed by the trio. Along with them, five other Black passengers were also asked to leave the aircraft, according to the complaint. Eventually, the case was resolved through a confidential agreement. At the time, American Airlines expressed its commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all customers, as reported by The Independent.
Williams and Shasholka had to face a series of questioning by the Miami-Dade PD officers upon their arrival. This experience left them feeling embarrassed and humiliated, as stated in their complaint.
In the following month, a retired Black circuit court judge named Pamela Hill-Veal had a distressing experience while traveling. She was seated in first-class on an American flight from Chicago to Phoenix when she was unexpectedly prevented by a flight attendant from using the first-class lavatory. Despite being instructed to use the restroom at the back of the aircraft, the 70-year-old Hill-Veal decided to use the first-class restroom shortly before landing. Unfortunately, this resulted in the same flight attendant threatening her with arrest. Once the plane landed, Hill-Veal was escorted off the aircraft and encountered police, who ultimately chose not to arrest her, as detailed in the complaint filed by Williams and Shasholka.
American Airlines responded to the allegations of discrimination, emphasizing their commitment to providing a positive travel experience for every customer. They acknowledged the seriousness of such claims and expressed their dedication to addressing them effectively.
According to their complaint, American Airlines and its employees were responsible for safeguarding Williams and Shasholka from unfounded allegations of criminal misconduct or any behavior that could result in the removal of passengers from the aircraft, threats of arrest, racial profiling, harassment, discrimination, false imprisonment, or intentional infliction of emotional distress. This duty, mandated by federal law, was meant to ensure their protection.
According to Rand, American Airlines should not have falsely accused his client of human trafficking his own wife. He believes that this incident is another example of racial discrimination.
According to an interview with The Independent, she stated that there is a prevalent issue of racial discrimination within American Airlines, highlighting a failure to adequately train employees and hold them accountable for engaging in discriminatory behavior.
The couple is seeking both compensatory and punitive damages, which will be determined in court. They are also requesting reimbursement for attorneys’ fees.
The allegations made in Williams and Shasholka’s lawsuit were filed on January 9. American has a period of 21 days to respond to these allegations.
