Aurora police provided new details on an officer-involved shooting that occurred on November 29, which left a suspect injured after being shot in the arm.
Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain highlighted the skill and “luck” involved in preventing any serious injuries or fatalities during the incident, which took place in the parking lot of the Sable Cove apartment complex.
At around 9:30 p.m., police dispatch received multiple reports of gunfire at the complex located at 900 South Dawson Way. Officers responded to the scene and spoke to witnesses who said a man was firing shots in the parking lot.
Authorities soon encountered a suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Arnadin Varupa, near South Sable Boulevard and East Kentucky Drive. Varupa, a resident of the apartment complex, was allegedly involved in a domestic dispute before the shooting took place.
As officers arrived, they found Varupa near a bus stop within the complex. Despite being ordered to drop his weapon, Varupa opened fire on the officers.
He was armed with a handgun and an extended magazine, although it has not been confirmed whether the magazine was illegal under state law. During the exchange of gunfire, one officer shot through the windshield of a police vehicle, while another police car was struck while an officer was inside.
Despite the chaotic situation and several officers being on the scene, no officers were injured. A total of six officers were involved in the shooting and have been placed on paid administrative leave, as per standard procedure. Varupa, currently in the Arapahoe County Jail, faces five counts of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer.
The Aurora Police Major Crimes Unit, along with a Critical Incident Response Team composed of external law enforcement and district attorney agencies, is investigating the incident.
The department’s Internal Affairs unit will also review the officers’ actions to ensure they followed proper procedures. Chief Chamberlain commended the officers for their ability to handle a dangerous and rapidly evolving situation.
