An armed robber is currently in police custody after being shot while attempting to escape with two accomplices in Chatham on Saturday morning. The whereabouts of the other two men are still unknown.
Around 9 a.m., three armed robbers stormed into the Subway restaurant located at 100 West 87th Street. They launched a physical assault on a 29-year-old employee, displaying at least one firearm. The assailants successfully robbed the establishment, taking cash from the register, before escaping through the back door.
During the incident, one of the robbers experienced an unforeseen turn of events. The 27-year-old suspect was shot in his right leg, although the Chicago Police Department did not provide details on how this occurred. Upon investigation, law enforcement discovered around twelve shell casings near the back entrance of the restaurant. It remains uncertain whether the suspect accidentally shot himself or if another individual is accountable for the gunshot.
Before the police arrived, witnesses reported that the injured robber attempted to flee the scene, inadvertently dropping his gun outside a nearby business. Reacting quickly, store employees seized the firearm, brought it inside the establishment, and secured the doors. Despite his efforts, the wounded robber was unable to gain entry. Subsequently, law enforcement apprehended him in close proximity and successfully retrieved the weapon. By the time the police arrived, the other two individuals had already made their escape.
According to court records, the suspect who sustained injuries and has a prominent tattoo of a gun on his face faced charges for two separate attempted murder cases in 2016. Eventually, he pleaded guilty to aggravated battery in one case and illegal possession of a firearm in the other. Judge Neera Walsh handed down a six-year sentence for the battery charge, along with a concurrent three-year sentence for the gun charge.
