Evee Addams, who hails from the Texas Hill Country, grew up in a conservative environment. Despite being assigned male at birth, she always felt a deep sense of being a woman.
Addams reflected on his journey of self-discovery, expressing, “The concept of living as a male never resonated with me. It simply didn’t align with who I truly felt I was. Moreover, I never envisioned myself in a romantic relationship with a woman.”
It has taken her a decade to complete her transition.
“This has always been who I am, and it’s been so freeing to have a judge sign off on that and be like, ‘You’re able to do this.’ And to have that taken away is traumatizing,” Addams said.
Addams mentioned that the majority of her documents indicate her gender as female, with the exception of her birth certificate. Unfortunately, in September of last year, the Texas Department of State Health Services made it clear that transgender individuals are no longer permitted to update their birth certificates through court orders. This has left Addams uncertain about how to proceed in obtaining a passport.
“They want to see your birth certificate and your license. And they want to see that those match in order to, you know, give you a passport, and so, they won’t. So, right now, I’m literally stuck,” Addams said. “Even if I wanted to run for some reason, just because … and I just need a break or to leave, I am not given that opportunity.”
Addams expressed her deep distress over the current situation, stating that with President Donald Trump now in office and enacting executive orders that restrict transgender rights at the federal level, it is truly disheartening. However, she remains determined and resolute in her stance and has no intention of backing down.
“I’m tired. My people are tired,” Addams said. “So, I don’t think it’s hopeless. I think there is where hope begins.”
A lawsuit has been filed challenging President Trump’s executive order which states that the government will only recognize a person’s sex assigned at birth. The lawsuit alleges that the State Department has been rejecting applications from transgender individuals.
