A pair of men were detained on Saturday in Havana for allegedly robbing ATMs across Illinois.
Marol Maglui Aguiar Rodriguez, 20, and Leandro Magdiel Bordones Villegas, 26, were arrested on Saturday on charges of burglary, criminal damage to property, conspiracy to commit criminal damage to property, and theft for their alleged involvement in hacking into ATMs across the state and country and withdrawing large sums of money.
According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, they were contacted on Thursday about a theft at an ATM in Abingdon, when someone used a bogus key to gain access to the machine and take money.
An investigation was launched, which led to surveillance tapes and other evidence indicating that the two had been related to other ATM crimes in Illinois and across the United States. Detectives were able to identify and trace their car, as well as their prospective whereabouts.
Detectives were led to Havana, where the pair and their vehicle were discovered and detained.
The sheriff’s office stated that the investigation into the burglaries is ongoing, with other suspects still at large for similar offenses.
In addition to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, police departments in Springfield, Mahomet, and Avon; sheriff’s departments in Fulton, Mason, Woodford, and LaSalle counties; and the FBI’s Peoria satellite office also helped catch the couple.
