A former deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has been found guilty of luring a minor in Arizona, according to authorities’ announcement on Tuesday.
A Yavapai County jury convicted Jeffrey York, 68, of luring a juvenile for sexual exploitation and two counts of attempted sexual conduct with a juvenile on Friday.
The Arizona State Prison could potentially sentence the Prescott resident to a maximum of 26 years and three months. Michael McGill from the Yavapai County Superior Court will preside over the sentencing, which is scheduled for Feb. 28.
How did authorities track down the retired LA deputy?
On September 30, 2023, local law enforcement joined forces with the FBI Task Force on Human Trafficking to conduct an undercover online sting operation. The operation was specifically aimed at apprehending individuals who were attempting to engage in sexual activities with minors.
York contacted and attempted to have sex with what he thought were a 7-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, but it was actually an undercover cop on social media York was speaking with.
The 68-year-old guy continued to communicate with the children via social media, texting, and phone calls. During these talks, the former Los Angeles deputy described the sexual activities he intended to execute on the youngsters.
Afterwards, York headed towards a prearranged meeting spot, only to find himself apprehended shortly thereafter.
“Adults who prey on children have no place in our community,” County Attorney Dennis McGrane said in a press release.
“The fact that Mr. York was a retired law enforcement officer is a stark betrayal of the oath he once took, and of the many fine officers who serve their communities with distinction and honor, and who ultimately brought Mr. York to justice. I hope the lengthy prison sentence Mr. York is facing will send a clear message to sexual predators that they are not welcome in Yavapai County. Let me be clear, if you try to abuse a child here, you will be caught and aggressively prosecuted by my Office.”
